Yandex.Market Analytics

Case study

Making marketplace data useful and vendor onboarding faster

Project & role

Yandex.Market Analytics was a joint Yandex–Sberbank project combining partner data with market insights. Clients included Microsoft, other international vendors and major retail chains.

By summer 2020, it covered 780 categories and more than 1,000 stores. Users included business analysts, store owners, marketers, commercial directors and assortment specialists.

As Senior Product Designer (April 2020–July 2021), I developed dashboards, reports and client onboarding for the service alongside analysts, engineers and product managers.

The challenge

Clients needed to understand which categories and brands were growing, who was buying them and where to expand their assortment. The available analytics settings did not always meet their needs, so they had to ask support to prepare some reports manually.

The goal was to increase self-service analytics use, help clients identify growth opportunities and reduce support requests.

Getting access was a separate challenge: manual plan selection, document exchanges and approvals could stretch onboarding to as long as 90 days in some cases.

Research & process

Surveys showed that some clients overlooked the filters and that the available options did not always cover their data selection needs. Users also needed configurable reports and exports. We prioritised requests by frequency, client scale and market segment size, then tracked usage and manual-report support requests.

For onboarding, I separately interviewed representatives of vendors and stores who were responsible for obtaining access. These conversations helped identify delays in plan selection, contract signing and approvals.

The solution

Flexible dashboards and reports

Templates provided a starting point. Based on client feedback, I made filters more noticeable and added missing options. Users could add or remove filter chips to adjust the selection. Data could be filtered by date range, category, brand, product attributes, geography, and shoppers’ gender and age.

Users could choose metrics, create charts, switch visualisation types, and add or reorder reports on their dashboards to explore demand trends, sales forecasts and opportunities to expand their assortment.

Exports for further analysis

I improved Excel/CSV exports for analysis and PDF/image exports for presentations. File generation took 10–20 minutes for narrower selections; full exports could take up to an hour.

Self-service onboarding

I designed self-service onboarding: plan selection, contract signing via electronic document exchange and automatic access. Partners could also add service packages and product categories without an account manager.

Outcomes

  • Clients created the reports they needed independently more often.
  • Support received fewer requests for manually prepared reports.
  • The complete journey from starting the onboarding process to receiving access took one day. Previously, some cases had taken up to 90 days.

Team feedback

We've worked with Dima on the service Yandex.Market Analytics. He did a great job and designed a lot of useful decisions. It was very efficient and comfortable to work with him.

Behind the scenes

Alongside this work, I developed Yandex.Market’s seller dashboard: tools for managing products, logistics and orders for an audience of 35,000 sellers.

I also contributed to product taxonomy and categorisation for a catalogue of 57 million SKUs across 890 categories. In the interfaces, I used Yandex’s component library and shared design patterns.

Analytics in practice

One client identified growing demand for robot vacuums, refocused its entire business on the category and later saw revenue grow eightfold.
